Most domain names can be registered for a min of 1 year and a maximum of 10 years. Towards the end of the registration period, we will send you a renewal reminder so you can extend the registration for a further 1-10 years or let it expire.
A domain purchaser in reality is a registrant; renting the license from the Registry to use the domain name for a set period, with an option to renew the lease. While you cannot buy domain names outright or permanently, what you can do is to register a name for a set period from 1 - 10 years.
